FANUC FA & Robot Foundation
2007 Award Ceremony and Technical Exchange Meeting
Original Paper Award Ceremony
FANUC FA and Robot Foundation was established in 1989 with its fund provided by FANUC, to help advance the factory automation (FA) and industrial robot technologies. The Foundation's Original Paper Award recognizes authors of creative research papers of industrial merits in the FA and industrial robot fields. The award is selected by the Foundation's Paper Award Screening Committee out of the research papers recommended by five academic societies relating to FA and industrial robots.
The 6th Award Ceremony and Technical Exchange Meeting took place on March 7, 2008 at Hotel Okura in Tokyo.
The Board of Directors and Councilors Meetings, which preceded the ceremony, were honored with greetings from Mr. Hideto Akiba, Director, Industrial Machinery Division, Manufacturing Industries Bureau of Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
The Award Ceremony was then opened by Dr. Masaru Sugiura, Chairman of the Foundation, and honored with greetings from Mr. Tetsuhiro Hosono, Director-General for Manufacturing Industries Bureau of METI. Mr. Hosono commented, "Under the circumstances where population declines and the global competition intensifies, we at the METI are making every effort to support the Japanese manufacturing industry by determining the Economic Strategy Plan to invigorate the Japanese economy. In this context, we position the robotic field as one of the most important fields for achieving innovation. We hope all researchers and engineers, including those who were honored with the awards today, to further commit themselves to their researches, and contribute to the development of the robotic industry."
Following the report on the screening process by Mr. Tamio Arai, Professor of the University of Tokyo and Chief of the Paper Award Screening Committee, Dr. Sugiura presented the award winners of the five research papers the commendation certificates and honorarium.
Then, FANUC Honorary Chairman Dr. S. Inaba, founder of the Foundation, presented each award winner with a silver medal inscribed with the name of the winner and Dr. S. Inaba's words of "There is a history of technology, but for engineers, there is no past. There is only creation."
Following the Award Ceremony, the Technical Exchange Meeting was opened by Prof. Emeritus Takeo Nakagawa of the University of Tokyo and President of FINETECH CO., LTD, who proposed a toast. Prof. Nakagawa commented, "There are so many problems that need to be solved immediately on the manufacturing floor. It is difficult for the companies to deal with a long-term goal or a goal with some risks. Therefore, we expect and wait for the achievements by the academic world, such as universities and research institutions. I strongly hope that those who won the awards today see and understand the problems the Japanese manufacturing faces, and do the creative researches the universities can only do, so that great companies like FANUC emerge one after another."
