Introducing a DC Controller for Collaborative Robots, Designed for Seamless Integration with AMRs and AGVs
FANUC announces the launch of the R-50iA Compact DC, a new DC-powered controller that expands the range of applications for its CRX series of collaborative robots. This compact controller supports DC power, which makes it ideal for systems where robots are mounted on mobile platforms such as AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots) and AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles). It keeps the ease of use and reliability of the CRX series while enabling seamless integration with mobile platforms, greater installation flexibility, and reduced wiring, helping manufacturing and logistics sites achieve flexible automation.
Challenges in Manufacturing and Logistics
As labor shortages become more severe, manufacturing and logistics sites increasingly need flexible automation for tasks such as inter-process transfer, parts supply, picking, and inspection. In recent years, distributed automation, in which robots mounted on AMRs or AGVs move to where they are needed and perform tasks on the spot, has been attracting attention. However, conventional robot controllers are limited by their AC power requirements and installation space, so mounting them on mobile platforms has required additional system design effort.
DC Power and Compact Design Make Mobile Robot Systems Easier to Build
DC Power Support
- DC power input for easy mounting on mobile platforms such as AMRs and AGVs
→ Simplifies building robot systems powered by the mobile platform's battery. - Inherits the ease of use of the CRX
→ Intuitive operation makes it easy to handle, even at sites introducing robots for the first time.
Reduced Wiring and Space Savings
- Power and control interfaces optimized for mounting on mobile platforms
→ Increases system design flexibility and reduces setup time. - Compact design
→ Fits easily into limited mounting spaces and helps reduce overall equipment size.
Capabilities Inherited from Higher-End Models
- The control performance and expandability of the R-50iA series in a compact enclosure
→ Inherits its functions, performance, operability, and reliability, while retaining expandability, including interfaces for various industrial networks, sensors, and safety devices.
Benefits
- Mounting a CRX on an AMR or AGV enables flexible automation of inter-process transfer, parts supply, picking, and more
- DC power support improves compatibility with the mobile platform's power system
- A compact and lightweight configuration increases design flexibility for the entire mobile robot
- The familiar operability of the CRX series makes on-site setup and operation easy
- Easy to introduce at sites with frequent layout changes, such as cell production, high-mix variable-volume production, and logistics, with the flexibility to adapt to future process changes
At JIMTOF 2026 (Japan International Machine Tool Fair), held at Tokyo Big Sight from Monday, October 26, FANUC will showcase an automation solution that combines an AMR equipped with a CRX collaborative robot and the new DC controller. Come and see its compact integration for yourself.
