FANUC CORPORATION is collaborating more closely with machine tool builders and expanding the data utilization capabilities of the FIELD system Basic Package (FsBP) for a more sophisticated approach to using production site data.

In recent years, as improvement activities leveraging IoT and AI are becoming increasingly widespread in the manufacturing industry, expectations are rising regarding the use of more detailed shop-floor information, such as production performance, quality data, tool information, and process data, besides equipment operating status data.

The FIELD system Basic Package (FsBP) is a data platform that collects data from machine tools, robots and other equipment, to facilitate the visualization of production sites and support continuous productivity improvements. Data can be gathered from not only FANUC products, but also a wide range of third-party machines and devices, enabling effective use of data across the entire factory.

With this scheme, machine signals defined by machine tool builders are preconfigured and registered within FsBP. This allows customers to readily utilize detailed machine status data provided by machine tool builders simply by selecting the machine tool.

Previously, to analyze a machine’s status in detail, customers had to identify the signal address and understand the meaning of signals which are different in each machine, as well as configure as necessary. This approach reduces the burden of signal investigation and individual configuration, providing an environment in which visualization and analysis of the machine status can be started immediately after introduction.

In addition, customers will be able to utilize a wide range of shop-floor data effortlessly, including:
  • Production performance
  • Information on defects and non-defects
  • Tool change status
  • Tool life information
  • Robot waiting time
  • Pallet change waiting time
As a result, customers will not only be able to know whether the equipment is in operation or has stopped, but can also acquire information on the following:
  • The reason for the stop
  • The process which is time consuming
  • Factors impacting productivity
  • Issues concerning quality and maintenance
Such information directly connects to improvement activities.

Furthermore, with centralized usage within FsBP of machine status information provided by different machine tool builders, factory-wide analysis and improvement activities can be performed with a common data platform, even when there is a mix of equipment from multiple manufacturers.

As AI adoption in the manufacturing industry gains momentum, the ability to easily collect and utilize high-quality shop-floor data is becoming increasingly important to maximize the value of AI. Through continued collaboration with machine tool builders, FANUC will further promote the utilization of on-site data with higher added value and strengthen the data platform that supports the use of AI.
