ROBOT New function: Remote Operation Robot

Some tasks that require automation by robots are harsh and dangerous, such as grinding where sparks fly, cutting with a sharp cutter, and slag removal of hot molten metal in casting. These tasks, however, involve subtle adjustments of force and delicate movements that align with the state of the workpiece, thus relying on human senses, and not being capable of being done with a single-motion robot.

To meet such needs, FANUC has developed a function where humans directly operate “leader” robots by meticulously using their senses, with a “follower” robot faithfully replicating the exact same movement in a remote dangerous location.

Furthermore, the follower robot detects the force from the workpiece and the operator can feel this force as if it were at hand. This enables the operator to stay in a safe place to perform tasks such as polishing workpieces by tracing the surface precisely, or remove slag which requires delicate force adjustment.

Features of the New Function

Smooth feeling of operation

A human directly operates a leader robot with Hand Guidance. The movement of the leader robot operated by the human is replicated by the follower robot. It is as if the follower robot is being directly operated by the human.

Work needing delicate adjustment of force

A follower robot equipped with a force sensor detects the force from the workpiece. The leader robot reproduces this force accurately so that the operator can feel the contact and resistance of the workpiece as if it were at hand. This enables work requiring delicate adjustment of force to be performed remotely.

Replicating the craftsmanship of artisans

By recording the motion path and speed of a follower robot, the same movement can be replicated later on. This enables skilled workers to have the robot reproduce their operations accurately without the need for teaching.

This function was displayed in use in a real application at FANUC’s New Products Open House Show in May 2025.
