Regarding the Possible Presence of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in FANUC CNC Systems
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were once widely used in transformer and capacitor insulating oils due to their high boiling point, flame resistance, and thermal and chemical stability. However, concerns over their toxicity led to a ban on their production and use in 1972.
Furthermore, in 2001, the Japanese government enacted the Act on Special Measures concerning Promotion of Proper Treatment of PCB Waste (“PCB Special Measures Act”) to ensure the proper disposal of PCB waste. Under this act, the disposal of low concentration PCB waste must be completed by March 31, 2027.
For certain FANUC products manufactured before 1990, such as tape readers and amplifiers, it is possible that trace amounts of low concentration PCBs may be present. This is due to factors such as the discontinuation of some component manufacturers and the absence of historical documentation from that period. In addition, replacement parts used during repairs or refurbishments may also potentially contain PCBs. Therefore, we kindly ask customers to exercise the same caution with repaired products.
For detailed information regarding the disposal of low concentration PCB waste, please refer to the Ministry of the Environment’s “Low Concentration PCB Waste Early Disposal Information Site.”
